Figure with Animal
RSPCA Commission
The sculpture 'Figure with Animal' was commissioned by the RSPCA as a centrepiece for its newly designed Memorial Garden in 2007. The sculpture was completed in December 2007 and transported to the RSPCA Headquarters in January 2008. The garden was officially opened in July 2008.
The brief stated that the sculpture needed to represent the RSPCA, as well as what the garden stands for, which is a place of remembrance for pets, or loved ones who were animal lovers. The sculpture was designed to reflect the nurturing relationship between animal lovers and their pets, using simplified abstracted forms which are symbolic rather than strictly representational. The overall idea was the image of a rosebud protected by the petals curled around it. The sculpture is quiet and reflective; a point of focus for the garden without dominating it; an image to help people to reflect and remember peacefully.
Sculpture at Wisley Gardens: Sitting Female
Wisley Garden Exhibition
Surrey Advertiser 5th September 2008 Arts Review:
‘Garden provides fertile ground for sculptures’
Stephanie Davies-Arai’s Sitting Female, a sinuously sculpted homage to fertility in Portland stone, is a pure abstract form that conjures an opening flower. Fertility is a very appropriate theme for garden sculpture. (Beatrice Phillpotts)
